Big Spring Park NYE with Steve Metz — Music & Fireworks Downtown Huntsville

May 12, 20263 min readBig Spring ParkHuntsville, Alabama

Big Spring Park is the unofficial center of downtown Huntsville. Concerts in the summer, the city's tree lighting in December, and on a few New Year's Eves — Metropolitan DJ Steve Metz on a stage at the south end of the lagoon, fireworks at midnight overhead. It is a different kind of DJ booking than a reception or private party, and the production planning starts months in advance. Read more about our Private Parties & Themed Events.

Outdoor Audio for a Public Crowd

Public outdoor events in cold weather come with two specific challenges: wind affecting throw, and equipment performance below freezing. We bring weather-protected speakers rated for outdoor use, run heavier cable than indoor events because line voltage drops over distance, and we have a generator on standby in case city power has issues. For a crowd at the lagoon, audio needs to reach across the water without distorting near the stage.

Timing the Set Around Fireworks

The set is built around midnight. Steve plans the build for the final 30 minutes so the crowd is already moving when the countdown starts. The fireworks have their own scored track on the city side; we time our music to clear by 11:59:30 and resume immediately after the show ends. Getting that handoff right matters — the crowd should feel one continuous event, not two.

What Public Events Tell Us About Private Ones

Bookings like the Big Spring Park NYE are what make Metropolitan DJ different. Private receptions are 100 to 300 guests with a known dance floor. Public outdoor events are thousands of people, weather variables, and a city audio permit. The same crew handles both, and that experience travels — the team that ran the lagoon set ran your friends' wedding last summer too.
